Glens Falls Figure Skating Club Handbook

About the Club

The Glens Falls Figure Skating Club is a non-profit organization based at the Glens Falls Civic Center, sanctioned by the United States Figure Skating Association, whose purpose is to promote the sport of skating to children and adults of all skill levels and ages.

The skating season generally runs from September to April each year for approximately 20 weeks. Session fees are set at the beginning of each season and are based solely on the cost of providing the service. These costs include ice rental, professional fees, insurance, etc. Refunds are given for medical reasons only. Fund raising or assessment fees may be instituted as needed during the season.

New members are always welcome. Fees will be pro-rated for members joining after the start of the season.

Guest Professionals
Skating Professionals not contracted with GFFSC may teach private lessons on GFFSC ice without cost.  Proof of insurance, however, WILL be required, since non-contracted pros will not necessarily be covered by GFFSC insurance.

Membership Fees

Individual Membership = $50.00
Each Additional Family Member = $35.00                                                                                                                 Associate Membership (Skating less than 4 times/year) = $35.00
Basic Skills Member = $20.00

Ice Fees
All payments for programs and ice must be paid according to the dates published at the time of registration. The balance of all session payments must be mailed to:

GFFSC
PO Box 500
Glens Falls, NY 12801

Session payments will NOT be accepted at the rink this year. NO SKATERS will be permitted to skate until balances are paid in full.

Refunds
Requests for refunds must be made in writing. Refunds will be given for medical reasons only.

Attendance
All skaters must "check in" at the ice monitor's table before entering the ice. Skaters who are "buying on" or receiving private lessons must also check in.

Missed Sessions
No make-ups for missed lessons or ice time will be allowed. This pertains to all skaters.

Buy-Ons
Club Members may "buy" additional ice time during ice time scheduled for their level. The buy-on rate for members is $15/hour and $10/half-hour. Non-GFFSC members may also "buy on" sessions provided they are a USFSA member. Insurance and Medical forms must be on file for all skaters before they take the ice.  For all sessions, buy-ons will be permitted at the discretion of the ice monitor, based on the number and level of skaters on the ice.

SKATING LEVEL - Basic Skills 0 or Passed Basic 1 through 7 - can Buy-on during Basic Skill Sessions and Basic 8 & above for private lessons only.

SKATING LEVEL - Basic 8 and All Higher Levels (Including Adults) - Can Buy-on during Basic 8 & above only.

Private Lessons
Skaters may arrange private lessons by contacting a skating professional directly. Pro fees for private lessons must be paid directly to the pro. Credentials of the professionals are available upon request.

Skating Assistants
Interested advanced skaters will be serving as teaching assistants and will be assigned to specific group lessons this year. When the skating professional is absent and a substitute cannot be obtained, the skating assistant, if appropriate, will teach the group lesson. Requirements for advanced skaters who wish to assist are as follows:

Minimum Age: 12 / Freestyle Level Passed: Preliminary / Can Assist: Snowplow Sam

Minimum Age: 14 / Freestyle Level Passed: Preliminary / Can Assist: Basic

Minimum Age: 14 / Freestyle Level Passed: Juvenile or Higher / Can Assist: Freestyle, MIF

Adult Skaters
Adult groups will be scheduled based on demand.   We are currently offering an Adult Fun & Fitness Program, in which all skaters must be at least 18 years of age.  Small group lessons in basic skating or ice dance are available for adult sessions.

Music
Skater's music may be on cassette or CD. The cassette or CD must be clearly labeled with the skater's name.  We strongly recommend that all skaters have at least one duplicate copy of your CD or cassette.  This year the GFFSC will provide a CD and Tape Case in which skaters can keep a file copy of their music right at the rink.  The copies will be available for use at any GFFSC session.  GFFSC is NOT responsible for CDs, tapes or cases EXCEPT those left in our file music case.

Mailboxes
Each skater/family will have a mail folder at the ice monitor's table. Each time you come to the rink, please check your folder for announcements, upcoming events, etc.

Parent Participation
Parents are encouraged to observe lessons and speak with the skating professionals either before ice sessions or at the end of each day's sessions. Just as we expect our skaters to conduct themselves appropriately, we ask that parents serve as role models in the arena. Parents should refrain from: yelling to their children when on the ice, blocking the entrance/exit to the ice, going onto the ice, and/or trying to speak to the skating professionals during lesson time.

Throughout the skating season, parents may be asked to fund-raise, monitor sessions, and assist with exhibitions or test sessions. Since the GFFSC is composed of a volunteer Board of Directors, support from parents is vital to the success of the organization and our events. The Board welcomes any comments or suggestions parents may have. A schedule of Board meetings will be published on the ice calendar, in the newsletter, and on the website.  All club members are welcome to attend the first thirty minutes of each meeting to bring specific issues/questions to the board.

Special Events
During the year, GFFSC attempts to host at least one exhibition and one test session. All skaters are encouraged to take part in the exhibition. Test sessions are held for advanced skaters who are progressing from pre-preliminary through senior levels. Participation in test sessions is at the discretion of the skating professionals.

Competitions are held throughout the year at various locations throughout the region. Participation in these competitions is at the discretion of the skater, family and professional based on the skater's readiness for the event.

Skaters who are planning to test or compete may need proof of good standing in our club in order to register.  Skaters can contact Michelle Capron at 747-6571 to arrange for sign-offs.  You may also email the form to michelle@glensfallsfigureskating.com or mail the form to 22 Maple Street, Hudson Falls, NY 12839-2019.  Please be sure to allow for plenty of time for forms to be signed and returned to you in time for your event.

Skating Apparel
For Basic Skills skaters, the following are recommended: Figure Skates, Helmet, Gloves. Children should be dressed warmly with layers that can be removed easily. Skating dresses are optional but if worn, should be short enough not to drag on the ice when squatting, bending, etc. Advanced skaters should wear attire practical for their level of skating. Skating dresses are not required for practices but are required for exhibitions, competitions and test sessions.

Conduct of Skaters
Skaters of all ages will be expected to demonstrate proper ice etiquette as follows:

No standing, sitting, or lying on the ice.

No stomping, kicking or dragging blades into the ice.

No eating, drinking or use of profanity on the ice.

Recognize that music will be played on a first-come, first-served basis. Preference will be given to those skaters in a private lesson up to a MAXIMUM of 3 times per 30 minutes regardless of the number of programs (freeskate or dance) a skater has. Skaters should NOT move their music ahead of another's without permission.

Skaters should be courteous to each other, recognize that all skaters progress at different rates, and refrain from commenting on one another's skating skills.

Skaters who fail to demonstrate proper ice etiquette will be asked to leave the ice at the discretion of the ice monitor.
